US inventor who held more than 300 patents, including the triode tube (which he called the audion) in 1906, precursor to the radio tube and one of the most influential inventions of the century . It generated, detected, and amplified radio waves. He also developed a movie-sound system and contributed to the phonograph, telephone, television, radar, and diathermy.
